New Year Skin Resolutions: Pink Lips Tips

Let's face it - holidays are great for the soul, but sometimes not so great for our skin or waistlines!

For those who had fun in the sun, your skin might be suffering a post-ultra violet ray hangover with signs of sun spots, freckles and uneven pigmentation. The thin skin on our lips also makes them the first area to show sun damage.

Tip: Pack a funky hat, SPF lip balm and stay out of the midday sun! Drinking cocktails or mocktails is a fun way to pass the hottest part of the day anyway!

For those who had fun in the snow or who were rugged up, extreme weather and dry air were probably not friendly to your skin.

Tip: Even when it's cold, make sure to use an SPF face cream when skiing, and always use a SPF lip balm.

New Year skin resolutions are easy - it's those other resolutions that take effort!

How to Get Pink Nipples

Sunbathing in Sydney? For those in the Southern hemisphere, summer is fast approaching. If you want to maintain pink nipples or lighten your dark nipples, make sure to follow these tips:

- Don't get tempted to sunbathe topless! If you do, at least use a sun cream of at least SPF30+.

- Regularly moisturize your general chest area, especially after long periods in salt or chlorine water.

- Use a balm or treatment lighting cream such as Fresh Up Skin Pinkish Cream.

Enjoying a spa in Stockholm? Hot water is great for relaxing but extreme temperatures can be damaging.

- Avoid soaking for too long in overly hot water. High temperatures can be drying and leave skin red and raw.

- Dry winter air can sap moisture from the skin so make sure to regularly moisturize and pamper skin, especially the delicate skin on your nipples.

Take care of your skin and enjoy your holidays!

How to Lighten Dark Lips in 3 Steps

Lipstick, lip gloss, lip shimmer - all great to use but sometimes you just want to go all-natural!

How can you make you lips look lighter, prettier and pinker?

Step 1: Preparation

We all know regular exfoliating is great for our face and body, but did you also know it can help to make your lips look more pink? Lipsticks, especially long-lasting ones, can really stain lips over time. The colour from lipstick can not only discolour your lips, but also leave a residue of oil and pigmentation.

  • Use a washcloth and some specialised make-up remover to gently rub your lips at least once a week. Be sure to take care as the skin of the lips is very delicate.
  • Using a soft toothbrush can also be very effective. Toothbrushes designed for babies are small and have soft bristles.

Step 2: Treatment

Lips have the thinnest skin on our bodies, so they deserve some regular treatment!

  • Lactic acid is a great ingredient to help lighten lips. Soak some cotton wool pads in milk and apply for several minutes.
  • Fresh avocado can also help smooth and moisturize lips. Apply all over your face and relax for a few minutes to get the full benefit!

Step 3: Protection

With no oil-producing glands, lips need constant protection against the elements including sun, wind and over-air conditioning.

  • Keep lips soft and plump by applying lip balm at night and throughout the day as needed. Use a balm with natural conditioning ingredients like cocoa butter. Lip balms made of mineral oils and petroleum are ineffective and only leave lips with a wall of oil-based material that is drying and harsh.
  • Always protect lips from damaging UV-rays with lip balms and lipsticks that contain Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15+. Shading your entire face from the sun by using a hat or sun umbrella will further improve your overall skin whitening program.
  • Drink plenty of water in order to stay hydrated.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Many countries have an annual campaign to increase awareness of this disease that mainly affects women. Early detection can help reduce the severity of breast cancer. Keep healthy by carrying out your monthly self-examinations, and see your doctor for your regular check. In some countries, such checks are subsidized by the government.

Signs of breast cancer can be:

  • Nipple tenderness or a lump or thickening in or near the breast or underarm area
  • A change in the skin texture or an enlargement of pores in the skin of the breast  (some describe this as similar to an orange peel’s texture)
  • A lump in the breast (It’s important to remember that all lumps should be investigated by a healthcare professional, but not all lumps are cancerous.)
  • Nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted
  • Skin of the breast, areola, or nipple that becomes scaly, red, or swollen or may have ridges or pitting resembling the skin of an orange

Dark Nipples – How to Lighten Nipples

Nipple color is unique to everyone and often depends on your genes. Some may find that their nipple color darkens due to medication, menstruation, aging, pregnancy and after having a baby.

What Causes Nipple Darkening?

The color of the nipples is determined by the amount of brown and red pigments present. The amount of these pigments forms naturally according to your genetic makeup. The color can vary from pink to red or nearly black. Generally speaking, people with paler skin tend to have lighter nipples, and those with darker skin have darker colored nipples.  But certain conditions such as aging and chafing of the skin, and life events including pregnancy and birth can cause excessive darkening of the areole.

How to Lighten Dark Nipples

Lightening of your nipples is possible through the use of natural skin lighteners such as Lactic Acid, Mulberry Extract and Vitamin C. These ingredients work to ensure old skin is removed and new skin is revealed. Lightening ingredients such as Arbutin lighten the skin by inhibiting the production of melanin in the skin by shutting down tyrozinase, an enzyme that affects pigmentation.  Due to the sensitive nature of the nipples, using chemical agents such as hydroquinone is not recommended as they could cause permanent damage and even cancer.

Do Homemade Remedies to Lighten Dark Nipples Naturally Work?

Many products in your kitchen cupboard can help to lighten nipples and make them pink again. Powdered milk, honey, avocados, cucumber and orange juice all have properties to naturally exfoliate and lighten the skin.

One issue with homemade recipes is working out how to balance how much exfoliating and how much whitening to do. Too much exfoliating can be damaging to your skin, and even cause it to darken. Overuse of ingredients to whiten your skin can result in dry and irritated skin, especially in delicate areas. As with any product – homemade or store-bought – please test first and stop using if your skin shows a reaction.

What Causes Dark Bikini Lines?

Wearing a bikini, or even a one piece swimsuit, can be a worry for some women. A dark bikini line is not party conversation and  can put a dampener on your upcoming summer holiday! The inner thighs and bikini line are highly sensitive areas. Dark marks, spots, ingrown hairs and shaving nicks can easily cause damage and marking to this delicate part of the body.

Causes of bikini line darkening
• Shaving the bikini line can damage the skin and cause darkening and scaring. Chemical hair removers can also damage sensitive skin.
• Chafing from tight clothing, in particular polyester panties and leg elastic, can increase sweating. Polyester and nylon clothing also tend to prevent the skin from breathing. This lack of oxygen can cause marking and darkening of the skin.
• Deodorants often contain aluminum and other ingredients designed to block sweat glands.

How can I stop my bikini line from darkening?
• Wax your bikini line rather than shaving or using hair-removal lotions. Although somewhat painful, waxing helps to gradually reduce the amount of hair present and make it finer. Permanent hair removal such as laser removal is also a great way to remove hair forever!
• Wear loose fitting, cotton underwear. Cotton absorbs excess moisture and prevents heat build-up.
• Use unscented, non-acidic, mild soap when cleaning this area. Moisturizers made from natural ingredients are also best.
• Eat a healthy diet that includes a variety of fruits and vegetables, wholegrain cereals, and lean meat. Avoid fatty foods to maintain good skin.
• Drink lots of water which can flush out toxins and keep the skin smooth and hydrated.
• Use sunblock with at least SPF 30 to prevent exposed skin from darkening.

Any other tips on lightening my bikini line?
• Use skin lightening product with natural and safe ingredients to remove dark spots and marks. Try Fresh Up Skin Pinkish Cream made from cucumber to whiten, soothe irritations and tighten skin, Vitamin C to lighten skin and remove excess darkening and Lactic Acid to rejuvenate the skin by removing dead skin cells.

Hydroquinone for Lips?

What's wrong with hydroquinone? Can hydroquinone lighten lips?

Hydroquinone is a skin bleaching ingredient used to lighten areas of dark skin. It works by inhibiting an enzyme reaction in skin cells. Many people are worried about the safety of hydroquinone and the European Union banned the use of it in cosmetics in 2001.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved studies in 2009 to examine whether hydroquinone is safe for external use. These studies are not yet finished.

Can hydroquinone cause cancer? Can it stop me from having children?

FDA is planning to use rats and mice to work out if hydroquinone can cause cancer, harm your ability to produce children and damage your central nervous system. If you are pregnant or planning to start a family, you are advised not to use hydroquinone. Nursing mothers should also consider the possibility that hydroquinone could be excreted in breast milk.

Can it cause skin irritation and sensitivity?

Hydroquinone can also cause skin irritation or even a burning sensation when applied to the skin. It can also cause sensitivity to UV exposure. People using hydroquinone may find that they burn more easily in the sun. Without proper skin protection, skin can quickly darken.

Does hydroquinone work on lips?

Hydroquinone should only ever be used externally, and is not recommended on areas of the body that may come into contact with bodily fluids. It should not be used around your eyes, lips or nose.

Hydroquinone can cause further darkening?

Some patients report a condition called exogenous ochronosis - yellow, grey and brown colored lesions caused by overuse of hydroquinone even in products with amounts as small as 2%. Currently, products that contain up to 2 percent hydroquinone may be sold in the U.S. without a prescription, and prescription skin-lightening products may contain up to 4 percent hydroquinone.

What can I do?

How to Get Pink Lips

Australia – sunny skies, beautiful beaches and dark lips?!

I’m just back from a short holiday to Australia to visit my relatives. Even in winter, it’s normally fine weather. However, my hands, face and lips suddenly became very dry. In particular, my lips became rough, blistered and cracked. I felt too busy to regularly apply lip balm and as a result my lips became dark pink in places – not black lips – but a sort of intense angry red color.

How do I get pink lips again? Firstly, I need to repair my lips. I came up with these tips:

- Drink lots of water. Hydration is key to keeping your entire body moisturized from inside!
- Avoid too much air-conditioning or heating as it is drying for my skin. If I can’t help this, then I need to make more effort to keep lips moisturized.

How do I get rid of dark lips? What about dry lips? From now on, I’ve promised myself that I’ll do the following:

- Use a lip balm with genuine moisturizing ingredients. I’ll stick to ingredients designed to introduce moisture back into my skin like cocoa butter, beeswax, avocado oil and honey.
- I’ll avoid oil-based products like Vaseline, which is made from petroleum jelly. Such products seal out moisture, rather than generate it.
- To prevent UV damage, I'll use a lip balm or lipstick during the day with SPF15+ or more.
- Stop licking my lips. Apparently saliva can irritate lips and the evaporation of the water in saliva can cause the skin to dry out even more quickly.

It’s taken about 3 weeks for lips to finally look and feel better. I look forward to another visit to Australia – with better lip care in mind!

How to Make Nipples Pink!

Why are my nipples brown? How do I get pink nipples?

Many women privately express their concerns about their nipple color. Some women find that over time, and particularly after having children, their nipple color changes from a light rosy pink to a darker tone. Others find that darker nipples can cause them to feel less attractive or shy with their partner.

Nipple color is generally determined by the level of pigment in your skin. The color of the nipple can range from pink to red, to dark brown or nearly black. Fair skin people tend to have lighter color nipples, and darker skin people have more pronounced nipple color.

The color of the areola can also change over time due to hormonal changes in the body. Menstruation, pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause nipples to darken dramatically. For women who have just had a baby, they will generally find that their nipples will return to a lighter color after some time although sadly it may not be the exact same color it once was. Getting rid of dark nipples after long bouts of breastfeeding can affect body confidence.

How can I lighten my nipples?

In order to help lighten your nipples and restore their natural color, use a cream containing only natural ingredients. As the skin on the nipples and areola is very delicate, it can easily become affected by harsh products. Ingredients effective for nipple lightening are Bearberry extract, Arbutin & Vitamin C.

Please consult your doctor if you experience any sudden changes in nipple color, texture or size.

How to Choose Suncreams

So you think you are doing the right thing and diligently putting sunscreen on everyday? Research shows that not all suncreams are the same! Let's look at some basics about suncreams.

What is an SPF?

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) displayed on the sunscreen label ranges from 2 to as high as 50 and refers to the product's ability to screen or block out the sun's harmful rays. For example, if you use a sunscreen with an SPF 15, you can be in the sun 15 times longer that you can without sunscreen before burning. Consumers need to be aware that SPF protection does not increase proportionally with an increased SPF number. While an SPF of 2 will absorb 50% of ultraviolet radiation, an SPF of 15 absorbs 93% and an SPF of 34 absorbs 97%.

How do you select a sunscreen?

  • Dermatologists strongly recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF 15 or greater year-round for all skin types. If you are fair-skinned and sunburn easily, you may want to select a sunscreen with a higher SPF to provide additional protection.

  • Choose a "broad-spectrum" sunscreen that protects against UVB and UVA radiation. PABA, or para-aminobenzoic acid, was one of the original ultraviolet B (UVB) protecting ingredients in sunscreens.

Tips

If you are exercising or in the pool, be sure to reapply your suncream regularly.

Why Are My Armpits Dark?

A somewhat embarrassing topic but important for many! Dark underarms can be caused by a number of factors related to medical and lifestyle concerns.

Melanin production and the increase in such levels can be a factor. As with skin on the lips and nipples, hormonal changes and Addison's disease can increase melanin production. A more serious concern is diabetes, where people with type 2 diabetes can find that insulin remaining in the bloodstream can lead to the thickening and darkening of the skin in certain areas, including under the arms.

Deodorants and antiperspirants can also produce an allergic or irritated reaction in the delicate armpit area. Excessive rubbing can have a similar effect. Both situations can lead to hyperkeratosis, a thickening of the skin- a condition designed to protect the skin against rubbing, pressure and irritation. Unfortunately, hyperpigmentation is often the downside of hyperkeratosis.

A more serious problem is erythrasma, a chronic infection in the deeper layers of the skin. Sometimes, the infection can lead to the formation of red, scaly patches. The border of the affected skin is well-defined, with a clear demarcation between the discolored patch and the surrounding normal skin. Over time, the pink or red skin fades to brown.

Shaving can also lead to the appearance of dark armpits – particularly as underarm hair tends to be dark and coarse. This stubble can be visible under the surface of the skin, especially if there are ingrown hairs. Waxing your armpits is a recommended way of hair removal as it removes hair by the root and leaves no stubble.

As with any skin concern, you should consult your doctor especially if you experience persistent itching or tenderness.

Fight Pollution - Whitening Routine

Smog, haze, industrial pollution and even indoor air pollution can cause havoc on your skin care whitening routine.

With your skin being the first line of defense against external nasties, it risks becoming damaged and marked. These pollutants prevent the skin from getting enough oxygen and lead to free radical production in the skin. Together with UV radiation, the slowdown in collagen and elastin production can cause sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles.

So what can we do?

1. Cover up! Protect yourself with sunglasses, clothing, hats and sun umbrellas.

Coolibar

2. Protect your skin by using a reputable suncream with at least 30 PA UV protection.

4. Ensure your normal beauty routine also includes whitening skin treatments.

Skin Bleaching - What is Hydroquinone?

Skin lightening, bleaching and whitening – some people think they need to use chemical agents to get effects. Hydroquinone is a chemical compound that is used in some skin whitening product to reduce the color of skin.

Ban on hydroquinone

However, the United States Food and Drug Administration has since 2006 proposed a ban on all over-the-counter cosmetics containing hydroquinone. In the European Union, hydroquinone has been banned in cosmetic creams since 2000. This is due to concern that hydroquinone is a possible carcinogen and could cause increased rates of tumours, cancer and cell defects.

Cancer concerns

Overuse of hydroquinone can in fact have the opposite effect - exogenous ochronosis is a condition caused by the excessive use of hydroquinone even in products with amounts as small as 2%. Signs of this condition are patches of yellow, grey and brown colored lesions.

Skin irritation and sensitivity

Hydroquinone can also cause skin irritation or even a burning sensation when applied to the skin. It can also cause sensitivity to UV exposure. So people using hydroquinone may find that they burn more easily in the sun. Other side effects include the reduced response to other more natural lightening creams.

Safe alternatives

With so many people concerned about the dangers of hydroquinone, many companies are working on products with ingredients powerful enough to replace this chemical. Many cosmetic products are now using plant-based and natural formulas with research showing good results. Some formulas include ingredients such as kojic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, vitamin C and arbutin. Avoid taking risks with your health and ensure that you use only reputable products that contain no hydroquinone, even in small amounts.

3 Key Ingredients to Naturally Whiter Skin

We all know that natural ingredients are best for skin lightening, but even wondered how they actually work? Let’s take a look at some key ingredients used in cosmetic treatments and dig a bit beneath the surface!

1. Lactic Acid, otherwise known as milk acid, is contained in your daily glass of milk! Applied to the skin, lactic acid works by assisting new cell generation and removing unhealthy layers of skin cells where darkened cells can accumulate. Lactic acid is also said to inhibit melanin – the natural pigment in our skin that dictates our skin tone. A proven moisturizer, acid also helps to hydrate the skin surface. Creams and lotions containing lactic acid can also stimulate collagen production and help to reduce fine wrinkles. Regular users of lactic acid can sometimes experience sun sensitivity so make sure to protect your skin from the sun.

2. Bearberry Extract (Arbutin) is a natural skin whitener extracted from the bearberry bush. Arbutin works by shutting down tyrozinase - an enzyme that affects pigmentation. It has similar effectiveness to hydroquinone – without the dangers. Applying a lotion containing arbutin on a daily basis is a sure way to lighter skin.

3. Vitamin C is famous for its great overall health benefits, but recent studies show that it is also wonderful for lightening our complexion. Vitamin C can inhibit the production of melanin. By blocking the production of melanin, the skin becomes lighter and brighter. Vitamin C is also tremendously effective in repairing scar tissue and dark areas on the skin.

Tips for Maintaining Naturally Pink Lips

Pink lips – a sign of health, beauty and attractiveness. But lips are also the first place to show signs of stress and an overly busy lifestyle! Lips are also vulnerable to smoking, excessive caffeine consumption, exposure to UV rays, cheap cosmetics, stains from lipsticks and dry weather.

Care for your lips by:

·Prevent the sun’s UV rays from damaging your delicate lip surface by always using a lip balm or lipstick containing SPF (sun protection factor). TryEos Lemon Drop SPF 16 Lip Balm.

·Wear hats or use sun parasols to prevent your lips from exposure to UV rays. Limit your time out in the midday sun.

·Moisturise! Use lip balm at night, especially during the summer, winter and in air conditioning. TryAlison Claire's Apricot Lip Balm.

·Use only lipsticks from reputable manufacturers. Regularly use a gentle makeup remover on your lips to remove lipstick build up and prevent staining. For a homemade solution, try pure coconut or olive oil soaked in a cotton bud.

·Natural remedies such ascucumber, cocoa butter and beeswaxare useful in helping to reduce lip darkening and prevent further damage.

Many people complain of having black lips or dark lips. However by caring for your lips, you can avoid excessive pigmentation and unnecessary darkness.
